Are there culture wars? Are we at a historical moment in which ideological battles force or demand changes in our societies that imply modifications in terms of rights and freedoms? Could it be that, rather than facilitating, social networks compartmentalize debates? The journalists and writers Marco Sifuentes, author of Bizarre Peru, where he analyzes a series of episodes from the Peruvian past and its role in the construction of the country’s identity; Esther Paniagua, technology expert and author of Error 404: Are you ready for a world without internet?; and Alex von Tunzelmann, author of Fallen Idols, a book that analyzes our ways of preserving and confronting the past as a society. They will talk with Guillermo Olmo, a BBC journalist.

About the speakers:

Marco Sifuentes is a Peruvian journalist and writer. He studied Journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, did a master’s degree in Political Science from that university and another, in Creative Writing, at the Complutense University of Madrid. He is director of the newscast “La Encerrona”, a daily journalistic podcast. He has founded different digital journalistic media, such as “Utero.pe”, “La Mula” and “Agenciaperú”.

Esther Paniagua She is a senior journalist, teacher and author specialized in science and technology, recognized as one of the best science writers in Europe. In 2020 and 2019 she was one of the “Top 100 Leading Women of Spain”. She was also chosen among the “100 Most Creative People in Business” by Forbes Spain magazine. She has received numerous awards in science, technology and innovation journalism.

Alex von Tunzelman is an English historian and screenwriter. She is the author of three books on the history of the 20th century, including the international bestseller Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire. His first feature film Churchill (2017), starred Brian Cox and Miranda Richardson.

William Olmo He is a correspondent for BBC News Mundo in Peru. Master in Contemporary History and in Journalism, she has worked for the BBC in Venezuela and in the United States. He previously worked as a journalist specialized in international information in Spain, his country.
