Oscar 2024 LIVE: time, channel, expectations and more about the great cinema gala

Has the Oscar? The biggest film award is getting ready to hold its ninety-sixth edition, as always from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (California, USA), through whose halls talents from both sides of the camera will parade. As always, excited speeches are expected from those who win the statuette, especially those who win it for the first time. Still, there appears to be little room for surprise.

Oscar 2024: What to expect from the gala?

For film critic María Alejandra Bernedo, the one that is poised to win the Best Film award is “Oppenheimer”, Christopher Nolan’s most recent film that follows the life of the scientist who created the Atomic Bomb. “He has been sweeping different awards, but especially the SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild Award), which are quite important because the largest number of voters in the academy are actors,” she maintains. Additionally, the film won top honor at the Producers Guild Awards; Historically, the winner of that award is almost certain to also take home the Oscar for Best Picture.

Film critic Sebastián Pimentel is in a similar attitude, who also sees “Oppenheimer” taking the top prize, and for the same reasons. Other films that in his opinion stood out last year were “The Moon Killers” by Martin Scorsese, the story of serial murders against members of the Osage nation; and “Those Who Remain by Alexander Payne,” which follows three characters forced to live together on a Christmas vacation in the 1970s. Although the specialist believes that this last film is worthy of the award, it has to be realistic. “I don’t think I have any chance of winning because the Oscar also tends to favor films that are great productions, where all the technical sections shine. That kind of movie is ‘Oppenheimer,’” he says.

On the Best Actor side, both agree that the balance tips in favor of Cillian Murphy and his hypnotic interpretation of J. Robert Oppenheimer, contradictory at times, dispassionate more times, while creating the greatest device of destruction in human history. Even so, both believe that the second option is Paul Giamatti, who plays history teacher Paul Hunhan in “Those Who Remain”, a man who lives for his work, but who in a mandatory confinement learns about human connection .

Where there is a close battle is in the Best Actress category. On the one hand, Emma Stone won the BAFTA award (from the British Academy) for her work as the rebellious Bella Baxter in “Poor Things”; On the other hand, Lily Gladstone won the SAG for Best Actress for playing murder survivor Mollie Burkhart in “Killers of the Moon.” “Nothing is defined on that side; It is a fairly difficult category in the sense that there is a lot of good competition,” says Bernedo. Gladstone has something going for her; “The political issue is added to it,” says Pimentel. “At the Oscar there is a poor awareness of North American culture; the Academy will always prefer white actors. Like paying a historical debt, they could include the racial, cultural issue, with Lily Gladstone.”

At the beginning of the text we mentioned the predictability of the prize. Still, there is room for surprises. After all, in 2017 “Moonlight” won the award for Best Picture, an award that was sung for “La La Land”, which was precisely announced as the winner of that award, a mistake that went down in history. Anything can happen in this dream factory called cinema.
