“My poor little angel” expands its saga with another film: this is how its new installment was made

Disney+ decided to bring Christmas forward and on November 12 celebrated “Disney + Day 2021” with the premiere of various original productions, including the movie “My poor and sweet little angel”, a new version of the classic “My poor little angel”, starring by Macaulay Culkin.

“My poor little angel” is one of the most remembered Christmas films of all time. With just $ 18 million of investment, the film managed to gross more than $ 476 million, garnered an Oscar nomination and became a pop culture phenomenon, of course, it also catapulted its protagonist to fame.

For more details on this new version, starring the young Archie Yates, the director Dan Mazer spoke with Saltar Intro of “El Comercio” and he narrated the challenge that was to expand the universe “My poor little angel”, how he decided not to restart the saga, but to work on a new version and how he chose the new protagonist.

-How do you feel about the premiere of the movie “My poor and sweet little angel” on Disney +?

I am really proud of the work that was done, the world loves “My Poor Little Angel” and we are getting good reviews for the film, which is an emotional escapist Christmas movie so that families can sit and watch together. This has been a hard work of 18 months that will find it in 90 minutes of fun that will make you forget all the bad things that are happening.

– When one is encouraged to work on a new version of something that is still in memory, it is usually a great challenge. What motivated you to make a remake of this classic?

It’s not really a remake, it’s a different version of what existed. The feelings, the lives and this new universe, something as if it were the Marvel or DC universe. We are not pretending that the original version was not great, it was, but this is a different story, with different characters and that it will reflect a little more 2021 than the 90s.

– From the trailer we see some references to the old franchise, such as the police officer McCallister. For those who have just seen the movie, what can you expect?

We hope that the child can identify with Max (Archie Yates), while the adults reflect with the parents. In the film there are references to “My poor little angel”, they will see them there and they will like it. In the original version the villains break into the house to rob, in this version the reason is another, Max is trying to defend his house, but he does not understand what has happened, it is a misunderstanding, and it can be seen from an angle from which children will also be able to draw their own conclusions.

– In the trailer there is a phrase: “The Christmas classics are there to change” What can we find in “My poor and sweet little angel” that we did not see in the movies starring Macaulay Culkin?

I think the movie is a combination of great humorous moments with not so violent scenes. It will be seen how parents can do everything possible to protect their home, their family. In addition, we have a luxury cast with Kenan Thompson, Aisling Bea, Ellie Kemper and many things that I love.

– How was the process to choose the cast? Especially Archie Yates, the new “little angel” of the franchise.

We had a long list of artists, I really loved the cast that was chosen, I really admire the work of Kenan, Ellie and with their work you can only say, “Oh, I love it.” With Archie we did what normally would be done, we went out and got hundreds of ‘American Kids’, but until the end of the process I went to see “JoJo Rabbit” and was impressed by what I saw. Archie is fun, adorable and does everything well, effortlessly, I felt him unique, so as soon as I saw him I thought: “Well, we already have Max.” Fortunately, he loved the script and it was available.

– The franchise “My poor little angel” had several films, could this be the beginning of a new saga? What is the next step?

I think this new version is a brilliant idea that demands many interactions and there are many possibilities to expand another universe of “My poor little Angel”, but first you have to see how the public receives it and understand that it is a universe like Marvel or DC , a whole new world. It would be great (to have more movies).
