Do any of you recognize yourself in this photo? Whether we are in it or not, many of us will see each other there. Because Yola Polastri represents our childhood in black and white, the games and the songs. Many generations of Peruvians grew up to the rhythm of the themes of the popular entertainer, who visited our homes every afternoon to share a pleasant moment with us.

She is ‘Don Pepito’ and she is also ‘Don José’. He sailed the seven seas and did not stop looking for the Turuleca hen. Yola Polastri Giribaldi is the ‘Ecooo…’ of various generations of Peruvians. He appeared on the small screen trying his luck in soap operas. But the doors of fame opened to him when he applied for a children’s program on Channel 4.

It was thus that he emerged as the fresh and pleasant face of ‘Children and their world’. Yola was the older sister who made us sing and dance. It was the young mom who entertained us with her special voice and contagious encouragement. We are in 1972, in the era of flared pants, flowered shirts and wide straps. The children of those years were waiting for Yola and her contests; with its bubbles, its choreographies and its multicolored dresses.

His program changed its name, but not its followers: ‘Children and their world’, ‘Hello Yola’ and ‘Yola rocker’. ‘La chica de la tele’ also jumped into the record industry, led by maestro Tito Chicoma, and released dozens of records that children bought to liven up their children’s parties, alternating their songs with those of disco music.

She is considered a pioneer in hosting children's programs on Peruvian television. For more than 24 years, she was not only a host but also a producer of her programs. (Photo: GEC Historical Archive)

‘La parrandita de Yola’ and ‘Hello Yola Rocker’ are some of her biggest hits. Yola Polastri’s universe grew even more with her famous live performances, in which ‘without much effort’ she filled stadiums with her thousands of little fans. His programs were also a quarry for characters who later succeeded on television, such as Jorge Benavides and Alberto Beingolea.
