It is too early to say whether Emmanuel Macron’s visit to New Caledonia has borne fruit. However, this Sunday evening the Elysee Palace announced in a press release that the state of emergency imposed in mid-May on the island where unrest is taking place “will not be extended and will end on Monday at 8 pm.” Emmanuel Macron “recalls that the lifting of the blockade is a prerequisite for the start of concrete and serious negotiations,” the Elysee Palace continues in this press release.
The President also announces the arrival “in the coming hours” of “7 additional mobile force units or 480 mobile gendarmes” who will strengthen the “internal security forces deployed on the ground.” “This violence cannot pretend to be part of legitimate political action,” the Elysee Palace reiterates, calling on elected officials to “restore dialogue.”
