The Recopa Sudamericana had its first edition in 1989 and its first champion was Nacional de Uruguay. The competition also had a Peruvian winner. Cienciano del Cusco managed to lift the trophy after beating Boca Juniors on penalties in a historic match in 2004.

Now, the final this year will be played by the Brazilians Palmeiras, who were crowned champions of the 2021 Copa Libertadores, and Athletico Paranaense, who won the Conmebol Sudamericana title. The matches will be back and forth. The first will be played on Wednesday, February 23, and everything will be defined on Wednesday, March 2.
