Álvaro Gutiérrez referred to the defeat of Universitario: “The attitude of the players leaves me calm”

Universitario lost undefeated in Liga 1 2022 after losing a visit (2-1) against Carlos Stein. The cream team started winning thanks to a header from Federico Alonso (59 ‘). However, the northern team turned the score around with a goal from Mena (67′) and an own goal from Nelinho Quina (90’+1’) who this time, unlike in previous games, dressed as an executioner.

After the meeting, the coach of the cream team, Álvaro Gutiérrez, considered that the team should improve, however, he congratulated his team. “The only thing that leaves me calm is the attitude that the players had. They never complained about the heat, the field or anything. You could see that some of them were tired. He stated at a press conference.

“I did not see the game very clearly beyond when we were winning and we finished with two rebounds inside the area that ended in our goal”, he added.

In the same way, he highlighted the performance of Piero Quispe, who was one of the best of the merengue cast. “I want to make a special mention to him, he collaborated in defensive tasks and that is the spirit that is needed for the U”, mentioned.

On the other hand, he also referred to the state of the field of the César Flores Marigorda stadium. “It was a rare, atypical game and we had to adapt to the conditions on the pitch. A very heavy court, it was a mattress where we could not exploit the virtues that we have”, he explained.

Universitario will face Barcelona in Ecuador this Wednesday, February 23, for the first leg of phase 2 of the Copa Libertadores at 7:30 pm (Peruvian time). The second leg will be played on March 2.
