Diego Godin on Uruguay vs. Peru: “Hopefully we can close the classification on Thursday”

The Uruguay national team escaped the football crisis it was going through, under the guidance of coach Diego Alonso, and is now one step away from sealing its qualification for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. This Thursday, the ‘Charrúas’ will face Peru, on the penultimate day of the Qualifiers, and Diego Godín made an analysis.

“We are with expectation, with enthusiasm, with desire, with all those good feelings that were left a month ago. We come to play these last two dates with that illusion”, were the first words of the experienced defender before the press, after his arrival in Montevideo to join the concentration of his national team.

“During this month, after the last date, we are in this position (4th) and we depend on us in these two duels. We are living with that desire and anxiety, thinking about these clashes that are coming. Thursday will come to play the first final we have, because there are two, let’s not forget”, added the defender.

In the same way, Diego Godín expressed his desire to ensure the pass to the World Cup in the coming day: “We are preparing in the best way, with the coach and teammates, to see what we will do to try to win. We will turn all that illusion to the day of the match”.

“We thought first of facing Peru. Reaching the World Cup depends on our result and what can happen in other matches. Hopefully we can close qualifying on Thursday. Otherwise, there is one more duel to play. We are thinking about the first game, going to win, as we thought about the previous double date”, he stated.

“We have our people in our stadium and with the energy that was generated by the last games. Thanks to what was done in the previous double date, the illusion of the fans awoke, there is public confidence in the squad of players. Everything is in our hands. Defining moments are always important, like this being able to go to the World Cup, not only for soccer players or those who like soccer, but for the whole country.”, declared Diego Godín.

The match Peru vs. Uruguay is scheduled for next Thursday, March 24, from 6:30 pm (Peruvian time), at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo. Currently, the ‘Charrúas’ occupy fourth place, with 22 points; while the ‘Blanquirroja’ is in the fifth box, adding 21 units.
