In addition to the affectionate greetings from Universitario and hundreds of fans on social networks, it was also known that there will be a mass in honor of Lolo, the same one that has been organized by the group of fans called Hinchada Crema.

The appointment is this Friday May 20 at the Cathedral of Lima, from 7:00 pm (Peruvian time). “After two years of the pandemic, we resume a tradition in honor of our greatest idol. We are waiting for you”, was the message of the page on Instagram, to invite the followers of the ‘U’.

Lolo Fernández, eternal idol

Lolo Fernández was born on May 20, 1913 in Hualcará, Cañete. The ex-soccer player’s endless romance with Universitario de Deportes began in 1930 -in the reserve team-, but it was on November 29, 1931 that he debuted in the first team, in an international match against Club Deportivo Magallanes de Chile.

For 23 uninterrupted seasons, Lolo Fernández shone with the cream shirt and was key to obtaining national titles in 1934, 1939, 1941, 1945, 1946 and 1949. In total, the Universitario symbol managed to shout 180 goals (156 with the ‘U’ and 24 with the Peruvian team).

The idolatry towards ‘Lolo’ Fernández was built, in addition to the goals, for the multiple displays of affection he showed the club over many years. Undoubtedly, one of the most remembered was when the gunner rejected a blank check from Colo Colo, to continue defending the Universitario shirt.

‘Lolo’ Fernández, also remembered for his powerful and lethal shot, died on September 17, 1996 in Lima, at the age of 83.
