Gustavo Alfaro on Byron Castillo: “There is nothing to keep us worried, we know we will go to the Qatar 2022 World Cup”

Gustavo Alfaro, coach of the Ecuador national team, appeared before the media prior to the friendly duel against Mexico. The Argentine strategist spoke about the importance of this new test for his direction, the relevance of the results and also gave his opinion on the controversy surrounding Byron Castillo.

”The evaluation that we will have tomorrow against Mexico will be very important, because we understand that they are going to demand of us with another demand for things, different from what Nigeria demanded of us, which demanded of us physically and with a different intensity.”, Alfaro pointed out during a press conference.

He added that Mexico controls the ball very well, with very good triangulations, with a great rotation, with individual abilities that, “Suddenly, it doesn’t have the vertigo and speed of an African team, but it does have the technique and associative capacity that the best teams in the world have”.

For Alfaro, tomorrow’s match is as relevant for Ecuador as it is for Mexico, “Because we are on the way to the World Cup, and these are the spaces where one can adjust details, look for a diagnosis of where we have to adjust, because then there will be no time for that”.

The coach assured that for him and his team, the dispute of the three friendlies in American stadiums (Nigeria, Mexico and Cape Verde) will be of great help due to the variety of complexities and demands that each one of them supposes, depending on the rivals that Ecuador will have in the World Cup.

Regarding the case of winger Byron Castillo, who has received criticism for an alleged inconsistency of his Ecuadorian nationality, Alfaro said he was convinced that his inclusion in the national team did not violate any regulations.

”We wait until the last moment, until we are legally convinced that everything was in order with the player, therefore, there is nothing that worries us and we will go to the World Cup”, he added.
