Rugby: Steve Borthwick is new England manager

The new head will bring the future Crunch to life. Steve Borthwick has become the new coach of XV de la Rose, the English Rugby Federation (RFU) announced on Monday. Nine months after the 2023 World Cup, the Leicester manager will replace Australian Eddie Jones, who was sacked two weeks earlier.

Former England captain Steve Borthwick led Leicester City to the Premier League title last season. He will be the head coach of XV de la Rose for five years, according to a press release from the RFU.

“We are delighted to welcome Steve back (…) He was our first choice to replace Eddie,” who was appointed in the fall of 2015, said RFU boss Bill Sweeney, quoted in a press release.

The former second-best international (43 years old, 57 caps from 2001 to 2010) who played for Bath and then Saracens was England’s assistant manager for eight years alongside Eddie Jones. He also coached the Japanese strikers, again as an assistant to the Australian, from 2012 to 2015.

During Jones’ seven years in office, England won the Six Nations Championship three times, including a Grand Slam in 2016, and reached the World Cup final in 2019.

But things get more complicated in 2022. XV de la Rose had its worst year since 2008 in terms of results, with six losses, five wins and a twelve-game draw. The record that convinced the English federation to sack their coach on 6 December.

“I’m honored to be named England manager and I look forward to accepting this challenge,” Borthwick said in a statement from the RFU. “English rugby is full of talent and I want to build a team that wins, makes the most of our huge potential and inspires the youth,” he added. I want the whole country to be proud of us and enjoy watching us play. »

On February 4, XV de la Rose will host Scotland at Twickenham in their first match of the 2023 Six Nations Tournament.
