Diego Elías seeks his revenge in the most watched tournament in world squash. The Peruvian qualified for the final of the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions, better known as the Squash Champions Tournament, which takes place in New York.
In a high-level match, Diego Elías, number 5 in the ranking, defeated New Zealander Paul Coll, number 4 in world squash, but the first seed in the tournament, in the semifinals. That is to say, Elías beat the top favorite of the contest 13-11, 8-11, 11-3 and 11-8. With the defeat, Paul Coll will not be able to take the lead in the Squash ranking.
This Thursday, at a time to be confirmed, Diego Elías will play the final against the Egyptian Marwan ElShorbagy, today number 6 in the squash ranking, and against whom he has a slight advantage in the last results they have had.
They have faced each other in 13 matches and Diego Elías has won 75% of duels. Although the Peruvian should be cautious, since he lost the last two matches against the Egyptian, in the Grasshopper Cup last October and in the Oracle Open, both in the semifinals.

It will be the first time they meet in an Elias final. In the previous duels, the Peruvian beat him 9 times, three of them in the semifinals. At the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions, Diego will seek his biggest title.
Last year he also managed to qualify for the final, but in the duel for the title he lost to the Egyptian Ali Farag, at that time world number 2 in squash, in a four-set match (16-14, 9-11, 11 -9 and 11-5).
The contest is considered the most watched in world squash and has been played since 1930 and for more than 20 years it has been held at the Grand Central Terminal, where tickets cost $170 to see a match.
Diego Elías???????? has swept Paul Coll???????? former number one in the world 3-1 to enter the final of the JP Morgan in New York, one of the 5 platinum tournaments of the
squash (like one of the greats in tennis).
It is a pride that he is Peruvian. Let’s value more · everything he does. He deserves it. pic.twitter.com/cIzudZCE7r— Ricardo Montoya Descalzi (@RMontoyaDes) January 26, 2023
