Top in the World: Kimberly García and the results that confirm her as the best Peruvian athlete

What Kimberly García has been doing with each step she takes is for Peruvian pride to grow. The national athlete achieved fourth place in the 20Km walk at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, showing that she is the place she continues to be among the top athletes in the world.

On a fairly hot day in the Hungarian capital, the Peruvian demonstrated her ability by leading the test for more than half of the competition, but the last five kilometers were very difficult due to the speed shown by the Spanish María Pérez, who ended with the victory final.

Kimi finished the 20km in 1:27:32, just six seconds off a podium spot. In the images of the official transmission, the Peruvian was noticed with some gestures of pain, but that did not prevent her from rising from seventh to fourth place in the last kilometer. A display of courage and love for the sport.

She could not defend the champion’s crown in the 20Km, but Kimberly García continues among the tops in the world, as shown by her results in the last two years. Now, she is expected to be able to recover physically so that early Thursday morning she can compete in the 35km.

Radical changes

There was a breaking point at Kimberly. After good results at the regional level, he set himself the goal of competing for a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, but the conditions in Sapporo and the conditions in which he arrived -he had previous injuries- did not allow him to even finish the test. “I suffered from depression, I wanted to take a break from my sports career,” he told El Comercio at the beginning of last year.

But he did not have to stop, if not direct his course. He changed coaches and looked for the Ecuadorian Andrés Chocho. He changed his training base and practically moved to the northern country to consolidate his growth. And so came the great victories.

In the 20km test, three athletes started with the red and white colors. Kimberly was always in the front pack, while Evelyn Inga battled between the top 15. Unfortunately, the judges sanctioned the national and she lost two minutes and then, at kilometer 18, they decided to withdraw her from the test.

Meanwhile, Mary Luz Andía competed in her first absolute world championship and finished the event in 31st place with a time of 1:35:38, her best mark of the year in the 20km. In a conversation on the Peruvian Athletics portal, Mary Luz assured that she felt the fatigue of competing without much recovery time, since in June and July she also competed in 20km events, and in Budapest she felt the effort.

The 22-year-old national is returning to the circuit after being a mother, and on July 29 she won the South American, a test in which she qualified for the World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Thus, the Peruvian delegation is present in Budapest. There are 12 Peruvian representatives and there is still a lot to see.
