America vs. San Luis: preview of the semifinal

América and Atlético San Luis qualified for the Mexican soccer semifinals on Saturday after eliminating León and Monterrey, respectively, in the second leg matches of the quarterfinals of the Apertura-2023 tournament.

At the Azteca stadium, América beat León 2-0 and won the tie with an aggregate score of 4-2.

The Colombian-Mexican Julián Quiñones scored 1-0 for the ‘Águilas’ of América in the 61st minute with a penalty that the referee awarded for a push by the Argentine Adonis Frías into the back of Henry Martín.

Quiñones took the penalty Panenka style with a soft, swooping touch to the center that deceived goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota.

The 89th minute was played when, after taking a corner kick from the left that was extended by the Uruguayan Jonathan Rodríguez with his head, Martín made it 2-0 with a shot on the edge of the six-yard box.

Later at the BBVA stadium, Atlético San Luis drew a 1-1 draw against Monterrey and advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

At minute 8, the Argentine-Mexican Rogelio Funes Mori swept into the San Luis small area to finish from point-blank range and put Monterrey’s ‘Rayados’ ahead 1-0.

Atlético made it 1-1 in the 49th minute when Brazilian Vitor Ferreira ‘Vitinho’ hit a left-footed shot at grass level inside the Monterrey area.
