“It is always a possibility”: Why do League 1 footballers threaten, if necessary, to go on strike?

Almost three weeks passed in the conference in which they showed their position against the decisions made by the FPF in the national championship for this season. Which? Basically, there is no limit on hiring registrations (today only 25 registered people over 21 years of age are allowed). They also demanded improvements in fields, dressing rooms, accommodations and transfers, and that the times in which matches are scheduled in cities with high temperatures be evaluated.

The first date of the Apertura Tournament, which was played this weekend, was the clear example that there was an omission. At least the last order mentioned in the previous paragraph. Atlético Grau and Alianza Atlético tied one goal on Sunday at the Campeones del 36 stadium, in Sullana, in a match that began at 2:30 in the afternoon, under immense heat with a thermal sensation of 39 degrees that not only affects the players, but also the fans who are prohibited from wearing hats, sunglasses or even buying water outside.

The situation seems to have reached a limit in which the footballers will make drastic decisions. DT can confirm that the Peruvian players would not only resign from the Peruvian team, but that there could also be a strike. “It (a strike) is always a possibility, but step by step,” Roberto Silva Pro, president of the Football Players Association (Safap), told us.

For his part, journalist Luis Carrillo Pinto, a columnist also in this newspaper, stated, through his official X account, that “there are almost 10% of players who have been left without a job in League 1 due to this provision.”

This measure that could be taken reminds us of when in 2003 the Decentralized was paralyzed with the footballers’ strike that demanded improvements in the organization of the tournament and the formalization of some management within the clubs. At that time there were many teams that made double contracts with footballers.

What do they say from the Federation?

The rumor that spreads in Peruvian football is generating movements in Videna. In fact, the coach of the Peruvian team, Jorge Fossati, is aware of everything, although he clearly cannot do anything at the moment because there is nothing official.

The problem is that nothing has been done until now. A board member even raised the issue in a session, but nothing happened. “I know that there is enormous discomfort among the players but I am not aware of any decision of this nature,” the federation told us.
