Juan Pablo Varillas managed to qualify for the semifinals of the ATP Challenger of Santiago II

Throughout the year, Juan Pablo Varillas (ATP: 127) has had outstanding performances and this time he reaped a new victory. The Peruvian tennis player managed to reach the semifinals of the ATP Challenger in Santiago II, in Chile, by beating Gerald Melzer (ATP: 514), his Austrian counterpart, in one hour and 17 minutes.

After leaving Julian Lenz on the road, the Peruvian representative became one of the favorites to get into the top four. And finally, he managed to meet expectations and started off on the right foot against Melzer, who he did not allow to react after the first point that was played.

The Austrian tennis player had the serve and was able to get 1-0 up in the first set, in a very tight way, but Juan Pablo Varillas tied quickly. Later, Gerald Melzer lost the service and could never assert himself in that first stage of the duel, ending with a 6-1 against in 33 minutes of competition.

During the second stage, Varillas started losing the service and was already 1-0 down on the scoreboard, but he knew how to eliminate that minimum distance immediately. After a great reaction, he managed to draw and turn the confrontation around, although it is necessary to mention that they came to be with a 3-3 partial.

Gerald Melzer was firm, until a deconcentration left him at a disadvantage and he ended up falling 6-3 in 44 minutes of play. In this way, the first Peruvian racket is now in the semifinals of the ATP Challenger in Santiago II and awaits the winner of the duel between Chilean Gonzalo Lama (ATP: 327) and Argentine Francisco Cerundolo (ATP: 110).

Juan Pablo Varillas seeks his revenge for a new individual title in this kind of competition, after having won it for the last time in Italy, at the Biella Challenger (May 2021). A few weeks ago, he came in second place in Ambato, Ecuador, and in Lima he could not do much, since he was dismissed prematurely in the round of 16.
