Rider Georgie Campbell dies during equestrian competition

The equestrian world is in mourning. British athlete Georgie Campbell died on Sunday, May 26, after falling while riding his horse during a cross-country competition on the fourth and final day of the Bicton International Equestrian Competition in Devon, England, the Guardian reports.

The 36-year-old woman and her 11-year-old horse, Global Quest, fell into the water near a fence on the track, according to a press release issued by event organizers. A spokesman for the NHS Foundation Trust said emergency services were called to an incident near Budleigh Salterton at 3.05pm on Sunday.

An air ambulance, a two-crew ground ambulance, a first responder and a hazardous area response team were dispatched to the scene. Despite the immediate arrival of doctors on the scene, it was not possible to save the professional racer.

“The Global Quest horse was assessed by veterinarians on site, returned to the stable and was uninjured,” the press release further clarified. “To respect the family’s privacy at this extremely difficult and sad time, no further details will be disclosed,” pageant organizers said. The event, which was scheduled to culminate this Sunday with a cross-country race, has been cancelled.

A high-level rider who competed in over 200 events and won a total of six, Georgie Campbell turned his attention to eventing – dressage, show jumping and cross-country. She was married to New Zealand racing driver Jesse Campbell, who represented New Zealand at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Together the couple created Team Campbell Eventing.
