Cristiano Ronaldo and his 801 goals: the challenge of overcoming a record that only FIFA ensures

Cristiano Ronaldo does not want doubts. If for some he already had 800 goals -the newspaper “Marca” gave him this record before today’s date-, the Portuguese made sure by scoring two goals in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal in the Premier League.

His goal against Villarreal, for the Champions League, had been scored as his 800 goal, but Manchester United himself came out to make public that he still had 799. For this reason, at Old Trafford against Arsenal he went out to erase any doubt.

With his double, then, Cristiano Ronaldo reached 801 goals, 686 of which were scored in clubs (Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus) and 115 with the Portugal team, in a total of 1,095 games.

In addition, he is only 14 goals away from reaching 700 goals at club level. Thus, he is on his way to being the top scorer in football history.

When he was still a Juventus forward, Cristiano scored his 760 goal, surpassing the record that many specialists give him of 759 goals by Austrian Josef Bican.

Nevertheless, In September 2020, FIFA published a note stating that Josef Bican’s estimated goal record was 805 official goals. between 1931 and 1950 (a total of 1468 if all his scores are added).

However, FIFA itself recognizes that they are difficult numbers to contrast due to their age and the little record that exists from that time. The governing body of soccer does not mention that Bican has scored 759 goals, but neither does it guarantee 805.

With what Cristiano Ronaldo has scored so far, and if we consider that Bican reached 805 goals, the Portuguese is only four away from matching him and could do so in 2021 since he still has six games to play, one of them for the Champions League .

However, what Cristiano Ronaldo will not be able to match will be the great goalscoring average that the Austrian achieved. If we consider the 759 goals in 495 games, it gives that he scored 1.53 goals per game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has 801 in 1,095 games, averaging 0.73 points per game. Not even Pelé could with that record, already with 1283 goals in his career, his average reached 1.4 goals per game.
