Elon Musk says the drop in Netflix users is due to the “woke virus”

Billionaire Elon Musk is in the news, among other things, for his strong intention to buy Twitter, but there is also time to join -without invitation- other controversies giving opinions without a filter from said social network. On this occasion, he pointed out his criticism of Netflix and estimated the reason for the negative figures of the streaming platform.

Netflix it lost 200,000 subscribers in the world in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the end of last year, its first drop in more than 10 years, which caused it to lose more than a third of its stock market value, some 54,000 million dollars.

The owner of Tesla, upon hearing the news, believed that the negative figures of the platform are the fault of the “woke virus”

What is the woke virus?

“Woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable”, said Musk in Twitter. But what exactly was the South African billionaire referring to?

The term “woke” was associated with the struggle movements of African-American communities in the United States and later began to encompass different social and rights manifestations such as the feminist and LGTBIQ movement, according to La Vanguardia.

Nevertheless, Musk when he mentions the term “woke” he refers to political correctness or the fear of offending different groups that has been imposed on Netflix productions, which, in his opinion, would have undermined the quality of the platform’s products.

“Can you please just stick to making science fiction and fantasy that is at least (mostly) about science fiction and fantasy?”was another Musk tweet that references Netflix programming.

Netflix situation

Currently, Netflix has 221.64 million subscribers to its “streaming” service worldwide, but as competition increases, its ability to attract new customers is diminishing, since in 2021 it registered the lowest growth in the last three years .

Thus, in the forecasts for the next quarter it has lowered its expectations and anticipates the loss of more than 2 million subscribers.

About the loss of subscribers, Netflix linked its stagnation to the appearance of new competitors, such as Disney and Apple, but also recalled that the suspension of its service in Russia resulted in the loss of 700,000 subscribers from that country.
