Juana Alarco de Dammert: Google pays tribute to her on her 180th birthday

Google pays homage today -through a doodle- to Juana Alarco de Dammertchild rights advocate and philanthropist who led the first social welfare program for mothers and children in Peru.

Known as “Children’s Granny,” she also helped establish the country’s first kindergartens and nurseries.

“Happy birthday Juana Alarco! Children in Peru today live a better life thanks to you”, is Google’s greeting for the educator, according to what is read on her page.

Born in Lima on a day like today, but in 1842, Dammert She had a humanitarian spirit as a child, often volunteering with her father at the local hospital. After marrying a German businessman in 1861, Dammert and her husband moved to Europe when France was undergoing major welfare reform. This inspired her to learn more about how governments can play an impactful role in protecting children’s lives.

Armed with new ideas, Dammert he returned to Peru in 1886, after the Chilean occupation ended, to help rebuild his war-torn country.

Dammert helped create an orphanage for children between the ages of seven and twelve. Later, she also established maternity cradle institutions for the children of working mothers, opened the first nursery in Peru, and established two schools that helped young children learn at their own pace.

In Lima there are two schools and a park that bear his name. There is also a bronze bust with his image in Neptuno Park, declared a member of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture.
