The transparent MicroLED and the speaker that looks like a work of art among the most striking launches before CES 2024

He CES (acronym for Consumer Electronics Show) has been the event in which some of the most important innovations in technology in the world are presented for almost six decades. Every year innovations are announced there in more than 40 categories ranging from robotics and sustainability to entertainment and smart homes. As a prelude to what will be its participation in this edition of the CES, the South Korean company Samsung gave a first look at the products with which it seeks to stand out in 2024 in the field of screens and sound. El Comercio was present at this ‘first look’ that took place at the emblematic Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas and we can conclude that the future is not only promising, but it really looks and sounds very good.

The company’s premise is to offer an immersive and immersive experience for the user. That is why when we arrived at the event’s conference room, we were greeted by the characters that accompany us at home when we go to some entertainment option: characters from movies, series, news or even athletes. Everyone seemed to have escaped from the screen, this as a way to illustrate what we were going to see at launch: the greater feeling of reality in your home when you turn on a screen or an audio device.

The president of Samsung Electronics, SW Yong, along with other senior executives of the firm such as James Fishler, head of the home entertainment division; Lydia Cho, head of TV product management; and David Phelps, head of the visualization division; They were in charge of announcing the innovations for 2024. Two products were, without a doubt, the big stars: the transparent MicroLED screen technology that makes you feel like you are seeing something real through a window and not a screen; and The Music Frame, a speaker that easily integrates into different spaces as it looks like a work of art more than a speaker.

Transparent screens, the trend of 2024

“Yes, it may look like a piece of glass, but it is actually a screen made with microLEDs, really very small chips. No one but Samsung offers this technology,” announced James Fishler when revealing what is still a prototype of transparent MicroLED screens.

Although transparent screen technology has been on the scene for some time, the advance presented by Samsung It stands out and takes the game several steps forward. “This is the most advanced display technology ever created,” Fishler emphasized during his presentation. At the ‘fist look’, where the transparent MicroLED stand was packed with journalists from all over the world the entire time, Samsung showed not one, but three screens with possible designs. We will focus on two of them: the one that looked like normal glass and the one that had a frameless design, generating a truly immersive visual effect, as if it were a hologram with a very high quality definition.

Although as we said, at the moment it is only a prototype, there are many possibilities that open up with this type of technology. In the presentation, for example, an American football game was projected. The transparent screen placed on the stand Samsung It felt like you were in a stadium, looking through a box window. A way of consuming sports at home that many will want to experience. “It is a screen that blends with your space. For your home, office or wherever,” said James Fishler by way of possible applications.

This possibility of camouflaging technology with different spaces, especially to go hand in hand with the lifestyle of users, is something that Samsung had already explored with a line with which it has already had very good results: The Frame, to which in 2024 they will add a very attractive audio line. The Music Frame. It is a speaker that looks like a work of art.

Art at home

The Music Frame is a speaker that, placed at home, could pass for a painting, a photo frame or a poster of your favorite artist. It can be customized to carry the image that the user desires and its finish is of such detail that it does not appear that it is an audio device. In addition, it has a power cable so thin that it can be mounted on walls and camouflaged perfectly. The sound it offers is of high quality and it has the possibility of integrating 2 frames and connecting them to a Samsung TV to obtain surround sound and have a home theater at home that actually looks like a set.

This product, at the moment, does not have a release date or a defined price, although there is a somewhat similar item on the market that could allow anyone who wishes to make an estimate of value: the symfonisk picture frame from Ikea and Sonos that has a cost US$259.99 in the United States.

The lifestyle line of Samsung currently has The Serif, The Terrace and The Frame, the latter has done so well that, in addition to its innovation in audio, it has the option of Art Store, a store that allows the user to purchase paintings from the most celebrated in the world (such as the Prado Museum) to have at home. The matte colors offered by The Frame screens are so perfect that they cannot be distinguished from a screen. In addition to the beauty it offers, this technology allows you to reduce energy costs by up to 10% when the screen is in ‘art mode’.

The heart of technology

For Celso Barros, director of Visual Display for Samsung Electronics Latin America, with whom we were able to talk after the presentation of the 2024 innovations, the big star among the launches is the NQ8 AI Gen3, the firm’s most recent TV processor and the one that allows for the impressive performance of many of the advertised items.

“Our most important launch is the third-generation NQ8 AI processor because it does everything that is necessary in our televisions, from image scaling, sound improvement and energy consumption optimization,” the executive highlighted. this processor that allows, for example, to fine-tune the resolution of the content so that it is displayed in ultra-high quality.

During his presentation, for example, James Fishler of Samsung, said that he is a fan of film classics, but eighties movies like “Breakfast Club” or “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” do not look good on current televisions, or they come out with those uncomfortable black stripes, something that is solved with this new processor , which also offers motion detection technology that scenes the part on which the human eye naturally focuses and puts it in the foreground, achieving more realistic images. Other interesting options are the Q-Symphony 2024, which seamlessly synchronizes audio from wireless speakers and a sound bar; and the Active Voice Amplifier Pro, which separates voices from mixed audio, to avoid those uncomfortable times when watching a movie or series you cannot clearly distinguish the dialogues.

The future of TV

Although the list of products presented by Samsung for 2024 is long, many of them had the common point of offering possibilities for different users and offering improvements to make the technology already developed by the company more efficient.

Such is the case of OLED televisions, which now have an option to eliminate the brightness that we were able to test. Usually, when you watch television, it is usually uncomfortable to see the reflection of the light coming through a window or even the reflection of a white pole or our phones. The new OLED Glare Free technology has achieved such an improvement that even exposing the screen to bright lights, the reflection is minimal, offering a pleasant viewing experience even in daylight.

Another product that tests the space is the Freestyle projector, which is currently available in the Peruvian market, but which showed its second generation within the framework of CES 2024 with a new function: the smart Edge Blending, which allows projections from two devices to create a large screen for images, all 100% portable.

But when it comes to projectors, the star of the event was the 8K Wireless, the industry’s first 8K wireless projector, which will be ideal for sports lovers and even e-sports. And since we’re talking about e-sports, gamers were also the target audience for several new alternatives, such as the new Odyssey Oled models with better screen curvature for an immersive gaming experience and options that allow multitasking functionalities. But what the firm stood out most was the development of 2D/3D Gaming monitors, which will allow access to 3D and virtual reality content without the need to use wearables.

But this was only a first glimpse of what will be presented within the framework of CES 2024, an event that this year will be focused on artificial intelligence and that will test everything that the imagination can aspire to.
