James McCann, a resident of Blyth, England, will have to face the Justice of that country after keeping a Hungarian man in deplorable conditions of servitude, who would have died recently of unknown causes. The man was recently tried for “modern slavery”against an elderly person.

On November 30, 2017, the police rescued Andras Varga in a sorry state, unkemptwithseveral layers of clothing to protect from the cold and with an appearance that he seemed drunk”, according to the report provided by the authorities and that served as evidence during the trial that was held weeks ago.

Varga had arrived in the UK in 2007, from Hungary, looking for new opportunities. On the way he met a man named Mike who would have helped him when he was on the street with self-employment jobs for which he paid him in between. £30-40 per day. However, over time, McCann, who claimed to be Mike’s friend, promised to help him and give him a roof over his head while he settled down.

Arriving in the town of Blyth, on Chestnut Avenue, where McCann lived, Varga was installed in a tent next to McCann’s caravan on the beach. Over time, the man was forced to live in a sheet metal shed that the family had improvised for him in the backyard of the main house, despite the low temperatures that hit that area.

In accordance with Daily Mailthe court report indicates that the shed did not have a bathroom where one could wash up and that he was forbidden to enter the main house to relieve themselves or take refuge from the low temperatures. Thus, Varga had to go to the sea or a supermarket of the area to be able to sanitize.

Finally, Varga was discovered by a local police officer, who noticed the precarious house that the family had in the back and decided to ask what it was. There he met a person whose appearance was worrying, so he gave the alert. Upon the arrival of the officers, they confirmed that the man did not have a toilet, Drinking water, heating or any essential service, except an electric power cable for lighting at night. In his testimony, Varga said that McCann paid him between 10 and 20 pounds sterling per day to do all the housework every day.

Vice Ward, the prosecutor who investigated the case, accused MacCann of “exploitation between November 1 and 30, 2017″, in exchange for cheap labor. The lawyer explained that Varga did it for fear of living on the street again. “He could have gotten hypothermia and not survived if they hadn’t found him,” he maintained.

McCann, for his part, defended himself by saying that “he had treated the employee well and that he had fed him at all times.” Finally, was tried by the Newcastle Crown Court for “modern slavery” and will spend two years and nine months in prison. According to the argument put forward by the authorities of that country, Varga spoke very little English, which could have been an aggravating factor in the situation of exploitation.

After the trial it was learned that Varga returned to Hungary where he died of an unknown illness, but that it would not have been linked to the torture he experienced in England.
