Colombian dies trying to cross the border between Bolivia and Chile

The lifeless body of a Colombian was found by the Chilean police this Tuesday near the border town of Colchane, where more than twenty foreigners have already died in a year trying to cross the border between bolivia Y chili.

A Chilean police patrol found the body of Colombian Alberto Perea, 32, who “did not carry any luggage, only his passport,” said a report from the Mayor’s Office of Colchane, a town in northern Chile.

Since 2020 thousands of migrants, mostly Venezuelans and in conditions of poverty, have crossed this area on foot at more than 4,000 meters of altitude and extreme temperatures, to reach chili where they seek a better life.

“Alberto Perea is the third migrant to die this year and on the 23rd since February of last year, in the framework of the migratory crisis that is being experienced in the Andean commune of Colchane,” the report added.

The Chilean border is closed after a new migration law took effect on Saturday. That law orders the police and military to “redirect” to the border any foreigner who evades immigration control due to disqualified passage.

This left dozens of migrants drifting, while the foreigners who managed to reach Colchane collapsed shelters installed by the government, according to the mayor of this town, Javier García.

“The people who were redirected during the day are stationed at night to cross the border again. The next day all these people were already in Chilean territory and we believe that they had already moved to the cities,” García told Radio Cooperativa.

Foreigners who arrive in Chilean cities have settled in tents or in squares or walk adrift asking for help.

Part of the population came out to protest, angry about irregular migration, while truck drivers blocked routes in northern and central Chile for four days in protest at the death of one of their colleagues in an incident involving foreigners.

Three Venezuelans were arrested for this fact, while the government ordered the militarization of four provinces in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, and Tarapacá (north) through which the irregular migratory flow enters from Peru and Bolivia.
