The Russian RT closes its channel in the US and lays off employees, according to CNN

The RT America channel, the US version of Russian television Russia Today, is going to cease operations and lay off most of its staff, according to CNN on Thursday.

The American media quotes an internal communication in which Misha Solodovnikov, head of the production company that operates the channel (T&R Productions), communicated the dismissals and told the employees that RT America is going to “cease production” at all of its facilities “as a result of unforeseen business interruptions.”

“Unfortunately, we anticipate that these layoffs will be permanent,” Solodovnikov noted in the message, which was also reported shortly after by the financial channel CNBC, but which has not been officially confirmed.

According to a CNBC source, the cessation of operations is immediate and more than a hundred workers were informed that their employment will end on May 3 after learning yesterday that this Thursday there would no longer be live programming.

DirecTV, the largest satellite television operator in USA., announced this week that it was going to stop broadcasting RT America in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This Wednesday, the European Union (EU) for its part decreed the veto on broadcasts in its territory of Russia Today and the channels it operates in several languages “until the aggression against Ukraine is stopped and until the Russian Federation and its associated media stop carrying out disinformation actions”.

Brussels, which also banned the broadcasting activities of the Russian media Sputnik, defended that these are not “media” but part of the “Russian war machine”.
