UN Rapporteur: “War in Ukraine can produce global famines”

Malnutrition rates, both in Russia like in Ukraine, have increased as a result of the invasion. However, these countries will not be the only ones affected by the conflict. The war can cause a growth in famines globally, warned this Friday the rapporteur of the UN on the right to food, Michael Fakhri.

Hunger has increased in the world in the past three years, but the invasion by Russia now leads us to famine in more places on the planet”, the expert stressed in a statement, who called for the end of the attacks “before there are profound and long-term consequences on global food security”.

Fakhri recalled that Ukraine and Russia are among the top five cereal exporters on the planet, and warned that the conflict between the two it is already having consequences on the food supply of places like Egypt, Turkey, Bangladesh or Iranwhich import more than 60% of their wheat from these two countries.

The risk extends to other major importers such as Lebanon, Tunisia, Pakistan, or countries in conflict such as Yemen or Pakistan, warned the rapporteur.

Ukraine warned Thursday at the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it could be forced to restrict its food exports if the conflict drags on.

The UN World Food Program (WFP) also warned today through its coordinator in Ukraine, Jakob Kern, that “the consequences of the conflict are spreading and will cause a collateral wave of hunger on the planet”.
