Japanese cities cancel exchanges with twinned Russian towns

Many cities japanese have canceled exchange activities with the Russian towns with which they are twinned as a result of the invasion of Ukraine launched by Moscow.

One of the last to do so is the town of Hiroshima, which planned to celebrate this year the 50th anniversary of relations with the municipality of Volgograd, in the south of Russia.

“The invasion by Russia and the messages suggesting that the country could use nuclear weapons trample on the feelings of the people of Hiroshima, who suffered a nuclear attack”, a city official told the Kyodo news agency today.

Hiroshima announced on March 9 that it was canceling the trip of a delegation to Volgograd headed by the mayor of the Japanese city, Kazumi Matsui, planned for September on the occasion of the aforementioned anniversary.

For her part, the governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, announced on March 11 that the Japanese capital, which is twinned with Moscow, was immediately suspending all exchange programs.

Osaka, the third largest city in the Japanese archipelago, even sent a letter to the Russian city with which it is twinned, Saint Petersburg.

“The invasion by the (Russian) armed forces is completely unacceptable. We ask for the withdrawal of troops as soon as possible to put an end to this situation.” Osaka Mayor Ichiro Matsui wrote in the letter.

Similarly, Maizuru, a municipality in western Japan twinned with the town of Nakhodka, published a statement in which it considered “unacceptable aggression”.

Niigata, a town on Japan’s northwestern coast with ties to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Birobidzhan, also recently canceled sending a delegation to Russia.

A total of 43 municipalities in Japan are twinned with Russian towns, although at the moment none of them has announced that they are definitively breaking the twinning.
