Charles Herbstera 67-year-old ranching billionaire, has denied the allegations but is facing backlash from conservatives in Nebraska, where he is vying for future governor.

I’m not looking for media attention or any other benefit. I just wasn’t going to lie and say it didn’t happen”, Slama, who was 22 at the time, said in a statement.

Herbster, whose fortune comes in part from the sale of bull semen, was described as the “special guest speaker” by organizers of Trump’s “Save America” rally, at a racetrack near Omaha.

Trump advisers informed the former president of those allegations earlier this month, according to Politico, but the Republican leader doubled down and pushed for Herbster to defend himself.

The cattle executive has dismissed the scandal as a “smear campaign” similar to attempts to attack Trump, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than two dozen women.

Trump, 75, has a long history of supporting public figures accused of misconduct, such as former White House adviser Rob Porter after he was fired over allegations that he beat two of his ex-wives.

The race for the Republican nomination for Nebraska governor on May 10 is a three-way fight between Herbster, billionaire hog farmer Jim Pillen and state Sen. Brett Lindstrom.

Trump’s support for Herbster angered much of the Republican power groups in Nebraska, a state in which the New York tycoon won by 20 points in 2020.
