Explosion in a Colombian mine leaves at least 14 missing

An explosion in a mine in the municipality of Zuliain the department Colombian Norte de Santander (border with Venezuela), leaves 14 missing and one injured so far, relief agencies reported Monday.

The Civil Defense detailed in a statement that it works in coordination with other relief agencies to attend to the emergency in which, according to “with information from the community”there are “14 people disappeared due to the effects of the explosion of methane gases in a mine located in the village of La Mestiza.”

To attend to the emergency, there are 12 volunteers and a Civil Defense official, in addition to three ambulances from the support network of the Departmental Institute of Health accompanying the Mining Rescue personnel.

Likewise, members of the National Army and the Mayor’s Office participate in the rescue operations. Zulia.

“So far, one person has been transferred to a care post with third-degree burns; In addition, air is supplied to the mine with fans to evacuate methane and oxygen gas residues for the people who would be trapped”, added the information.

On May 5, a Venezuelan and a Colombian miner were killed by a methane gas explosion in a mine in the department of Boyacá, in central Colombia.
