Fernández promises to defend the rights of Latin America at the Summit of the Americas in the US.

President Argentinian, Alberto Fernandezassured this Tuesday that he will defend the “rights” and “unity” of Latin America during his participation in the IX Summit of the Americas to be held in Los Angeles until next Friday

“We are preparing to go to the Summit of the Americas, to defend the rights of Latin America. I will defend the unity of Latin America. Unity is not declaimed, it is exercised, and the best way to exercise it is not to segregate anyone,” said Fernández, who will leave this Tuesday night for the United States to attend the hemispheric meeting.

Speaking to journalists at the Casa Rosada, Fernández, who also currently chairs the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), said that he regrets “greatly the non-presence of countries that have not been invited,” referring to Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

“We will try to bring his voice to that forum as president of CELAC that I am,” he said.

The Argentine head of state had confirmed his attendance at the hemispheric meeting last Wednesday, after which he received a call from the president of the United States, Joe Biden, who invited him to visit Washington in July.

The confirmation of Fernández’s attendance at the meeting in Los Angeles and the dialogue with Biden occurred after two weeks ago the Argentine president received Christopher Dodd, special adviser to the United States Government for the IX Summit of the Americas.

After that meeting, Dodd emphasized the “strength” of the United States’ relationship with Argentina, built on the “shared commitment to democracy, human rights and economic prosperity” and was “hopeful” with an “active” participation of Fernández at the summit as “regional leader”.

Previously, the Argentine government had publicly questioned the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the countries invited to the Summit of the Americas, something that has also caused discomfort in other Latin American governments.

The Argentine foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero, said days ago that the Fernández government has proposed “for months” to the organizers that the Summit of the Americas be “a forum without exclusions and that brings together all voices”, in particular “in this time of global crisis as a result of the pandemic and the war in the heart of Europe and the consequences that are already being felt in the Latin American region.

“Another decision was made. But, in any case, Argentina raises the need to participate in the Summit of the Americas and leave there raised its position on its view of regional integration, the potential that the region has and the difficulties that the region is having, “he said. last Saturday Cafiero, in declarations to Radio 10 of Buenos Aires.
