Colombia Elections 2022: Francia Márquez votes with the hope that her people will not suffer more violence

The Colombian vice-presidential candidate France Marquezrunning mate of Gustavo Petrovoted this Sunday in his native Suárez, in the convulsive department of Cauca, with the hope of achieving a victory in this second round of elections that will allow his people to no longer suffer from violence.

“We are going to live tasty, I am voting so that my municipality does not have to suffer violence, so that my people do not have to walk in fear”expressed Marquez after casting their vote in a coliseum in Suárez, one of the most affected by the armed conflict.

In that sense, the Afro-Colombian candidate said: “This town has had threats of violence these days, this town right now has threats that they will put a bomb anywhere. We are tired of the violence, my people have suffered from the violence, the youth here have no opportunities”.

For this reason, he hopes that if they win there will be “opportunities for young people” because his region, like others in Colombia, are “territories bathed in blood.”

“Suárez was a haven of peace and today people are afraid to go out at night,” he said, adding: “Whatever happens, we are going to continue here with joy, I want to tell all of Colombia to receive the results in peace, with tranquility, with energy, with enthusiasm”.

This is the closest election in recent times in Colombia since the polls give a technical tie between Petro and the populist Rodolfo Hernández, candidate of the Anti-Corruption Governors League.

In the first round, held on May 29, Petro obtained 8,527,768 votes (40.32%), and Hernández received 5,953,209 ballots (28.15%).
