Ecuador declares a state of emergency after the death of 5 police officers at the hands of drug traffickers

Several attacks perpetrated by drug gangs left five policemen dead on Tuesday in Ecuadorwhich led to the president William Lasso to decree a state of exception for the two provinces hardest hit by crime linked to drug trafficking.

“I am declaring a state of emergency in the provinces of Guayas and Esmeraldas, and a curfew starting at 9:00 p.m. (02:00 GMT)”expressed the president on radio and television, without specifying how long the measure will last.

The Constitution allows the president to declare a state of emergency in the face of a serious internal commotion and order the use of the Armed Forces.

The Ministry of the Interior reported that Tuesday’s attacks left “5 deceased policemen” in the commercial port of Guayaquil (southwest Ecuador and capital of Guayas) and the neighboring town of Durán.

Previously, the holder of that portfolio, Juan Zapata, reported two dead policemen in Guayaquil, as well as two other wounded.

As a result of the temporary retention of eight prison guards in Esmeraldas, a video circulated on social networks in which two agents appear with explosives attached to their bodies.
