“The transition has begun”, announces Lula’s team after the first meeting with Bolsonaro’s cabinet

The elected vice president of Brazil, Gerald Alckminannounced this Thursday the start of the transition of power when meeting with the chief of staff of Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential palace of the Planalto, in Brasilia, after the victory of Lula at the polls.

“The conversation was quite helpful, very objective, and the transition has already started,” Alckmin said, at a press conference, after the meeting with Ciro Nogueira.

Alckmin, 69 years old and former historical leader of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), was appointed by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as coordinator of the transition with the Bolsonaro administration until his inauguration, on January 1, 2023.

By law, the Lula team may require the appointment of up to 50 officials, who will work from Monday and during the next two months in offices of the Banco de Brazil Cultural Center.

The objective will be to exchange information to “to give continuity to the services provided to the population”starting in January, explained the vice president-elect.

“Now we have to do it (the transition) in the best possible way, for the benefit of the population,” he added.

The meeting between officials occurred while Brazil still records illegal blockages on roads, which have lost strength after a request for Bolsonaro on Wednesday so that protesters leave the cuts.

Alckmin said that “The right to circulate is sacred” and criticized that blockages can compromise “People’s health, hospital supplies” and bring “Damages” For the economy.
