An impressive tunnel under Niagara Falls now accessible to visitors

A new attraction has been offered to tourists visiting Niagara Falls since July 2022. Located on the Canadian side, it is a tunnel that ends at a viewing platform almost at the base of Horseshoe Falls. “Best place to see the falls,” reports CNN.

This tunnel is 670 meters long. It is part of the disused Niagara Parks Hydroelectric Generating Station. A site in operation between 1905 and 2006, which supplied the regional industry. The latter was initially operated by the Canadian Niagara Power Company. Its goal: to create alternating current using the water from the falls.

A renovated place

The places can be visited with guides. One of them explains: “It took four years for thousands of workers to dig almost 55 meters under the production hall using lanterns, dynamite, pickaxes and shovels. It’s amazing what they’ve done without electricity.” The underground consists of four layers of bricks but also 45 cm of concrete.

It is after visiting the hydroelectric plant that tourists can continue the experience. They are encouraged to climb into a glass elevator which takes them 55 meters below. There they can join the tunnel. The site was completely renovated before being offered for viewing, for an amount of 19 million dollars, or around 19,253,365 euros. In addition to seeing several falls, visitors find themselves facing the boats carrying tourists as close as possible to the waterfalls.
