Twitter temporarily closes offices as layoffs begin

Twitter Inc temporarily closed its offices on Friday after telling employees they would be informed by email later if they were to be laid off.

The social media company said in an email to staff that it would inform them by 9 am Pacific time on Friday (12 pm EDT/4 pm GMT) about the job cuts.

Musk, the world’s richest person, is seeking to cut around 3,700 employees from Twitteror about half of the workforce, as it seeks to cut costs and impose a demanding new work ethic, according to internal plans reviewed by Reuters this week.

The company’s content moderation team is expected to be the target of the cuts, tweets from Twitter employees suggested on Friday. Musk has vowed to restore free speech and prevent it from descending into a “hellscape.”
