Pedro Sánchez: We are closer than ever to agreeing on a cap on the price of gas

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezassured this Thursday that it is “closer than ever” to reaching an agreement to put a cap on the price of gas in the European Union and that it could materialize next Monday.

Sanchez He expressed that optimism at the press conference with which he closed his participation in the last European Council of the year, where the EU leaders urged their energy ministers to close an agreement on Monday in relation to that gas cap.

“We couldn’t keep going around this discussion,” said the head of the Executive, who considered that if the agreement is reached on Monday, an important political success will have been achieved for Spain and for all of Europe.

Due to the development of the conversations that he has had with other leaders, he said that there are advances that seemed unimaginable some time ago.

“We are closer than ever. We are very close to reaching an agreement.”insisted to explain later that Spain has taken steps to be able to bring positions closer.

In his opinion, there is a clear mandate for this from the heads of state and government of the EU to their energy ministers.

In addition, he took the opportunity to praise the work being carried out in this regard by his third vice president and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera.

In line with this, he recalled that the Spanish Government was the first to speak of joint purchases and to intervene in the price of gas when it seemed impossible.

“It was possible, thanks to this we are bending the inflation curve, and I hope that this measure, which is going to be very necessary for the European industry, is possible,” he added.

Sánchez reviewed other agreements that were adopted in the European Council and, to questions from journalists, referred to the alleged bribery scheme in the European Parliament that is spread across Qatar and Morocco to express his confidence in the president of the European Parliament , Roberta Metsola, and summon the conclusion of the investigations to act accordingly.

But he did acknowledge that it is a matter of “extreme gravity” in which a vice president of the institution, the Greek socialist, Eva Kaili, is involved.
