Mexico: ex-mayor shot dead at a funeral in Veracruz

The crime occurred almost at midnight on Thursday in the municipal seat of Acayucan, an area near the Texistepec City Hall, where the victim governed under the acronym of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

The victim was attacked by a lone hitman when he was at a relative’s funeral on 5 de Mayo street, in the central neighborhood of Acayucan.

Witnesses reported that the politician was transferred alive to a local hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.

The State Attorney General’s Office began an investigation into the case to try to determine those responsible and the motive for the murder.

The crime of the former mayor adds to a wave of murders of municipal officials in Veracruz, an entity where historically the death throes of violence affect all sectors.

On November 29, the first acting councilor of the Texistepec City Council, Enrique Argüelles Montero, was shot to death.

And on December 6, presumed members of organized crime murdered the trustee of the Omealca City Council, Miguel Tinoco García, in the central area of ​​Veracruz.

The entity occupies the seventh position at the national level in criminal incidence; In October alone, 6,979 crimes were reported.

The Criminal Incidence report of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, placed Veracruz in seventh place at the national level with the highest number of reported crimes.

During the current six-year term of the federal government, there have been 60 murders of councilors throughout the country, according to a report by the security consultancy Etellekt.

From December 1, 2018 to October 5, 2022, 18 mayors, 31 councilors and 11 trustees were murdered in Mexico.
