He added that the intention of two planned attacks was to give “beginning of chaos” to force the authorities to declare a state of siege and allow the military to initiate the coup.

“I decided to draw up a plan with the protesters at the Army Headquarters to provoke the intervention of the Armed Forces and the declaration of a state of siege to prevent the establishment of communism in Brazil”, he claimed.

Businessman George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, 54, was formally charged with terrorism after confessing that he built the explosive device that was inserted into a fuel tanker truck and deactivated on Saturday by police before the vehicle reached the Brasilia international airport.

Sousa said that he lives in the Amazonian state of Pará and that he has been in Brasilia since November 12 to reinforce the groups of Bolsonaro supporters camped out in front of the Army and that they do not recognize the victory of Lula in the October presidential elections.

“What motivated me to acquire the weapons (seized at his residence) were the words of President Bolsonaro who always emphasizes the importance of civilian weapons,” added.

Lula’s future Justice Minister, Flávio Dino, said that the camps set up by groups of Bolsonaristas in front of the barracks to call for a military coup had become incubators for terrorists and he asked the authorities to dismantle them.

“The serious events of Saturday in Brasilia prove that these ‘patriot’ camps have become incubators for terrorists”he claimed.

The deactivation of a device placed inside a tanker truck and the discovery of the arsenal in the house of the accused of arming the bomb occurred just eight days after the inauguration of Lula and raised fears about possible violent acts during the inauguration.

At the inauguration ceremony of the leader and founder of the Workers’ Party, at least 17 heads of state or government have confirmed attendance, including the king of Spain and the presidents of Germany, Portugal, Argentina and Uruguay.

Some 300,000 people are also expected to participate in the musical festival organized for the population to greet Lula and in which 30 singers and musical groups will offer concerts.
