Gustavo Petro cancels his state visit to Chile due to landslide in Colombia

President Gustavo Petro decided to cancel his schedule in Chili Tuesday to return to Colombia and attend with his government team the emergency presented in Cauca, in the southwest of the country, where a landslide affected some houses and a school.

The emergency in the rural area of ​​the municipality of Rosas, in Cauca, did not leave fatalities, the president reported on Twitter. However, six people – including two elderly people – were trapped in the collapse for hours until an Air Force aircraft rescued them on Monday night.

The local mayor’s office of Rosas explained in a statement that the mass movement was caused by the heavy rains that were recorded in the area and that affected a main road, causing its temporary closure.

The authorities had been monitoring the site since January 6, when a school and several houses presented cracks. Given the alert, the mayor’s office explained that several people were evacuated due to the imminent risk of a collapse, which finally happened on Monday.

The presidency estimates that at least 150 families were affected.

Petro had been on an official visit to Chile since Monday, where he met with his counterpart Gabriel Boric to discuss issues on the bilateral agenda such as climate change, but above all to express his rejection of the massive assault on the headquarters of the powers of the Brazilian State. against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

On Tuesday Petro had planned to visit the Chilean Supreme Court and the hybrid train in the city of Limache.
