Turkey “is not in a position” to ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO

Turkey “is not in a position” to ratify for the moment the entry of Sweden on the NATOdeclared Ibrahim Kalin, an adviser to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Saturday after an incident that caused unrest in Ankara.

“We are not in a position to send the law [de ratificación] to Parliament, we have a real problem with this issue” and the deputies could reject it, Kalin said.

The Turkish government summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara to protest the release on Thursday of a video montage made by the Swedish branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) showing Erdogan hanging under the epithet “dictator”.

Since May, Turkey has been blocking the candidacies of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), considering them sanctuaries for members of the PKK and other organizations that it defines as “terrorists”.

“We want to move forward, but if these types of incidents are repeated, the process [de adhesión de Suecia] it will slow down,” Kalin told reporters.

The Turkish presidential adviser affirmed that Sweden must send “a clear message” about its position towards the members of the PKK who reside in the Nordic country.

Sweden “should ensure, for example, that [el PKK] it will no longer be able to recruit or raise funds” within its borders, he declared.

Kalin acknowledged however that the new Swedish government took several important initiatives, such as the “highly appreciated” visit of the Scandinavian prime minister to Ankara shortly after taking office.

When Sweden and Finland submitted their application for membership to strengthen the Western military alliance, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Turkey demanded that these countries expel several members of the PKK and the movement of the preacher Fetullah Güllen, accused of having fomented a coup. in 2016.

In early December, Sweden expelled a PKK member, sending him to Turkey, where he was promptly jailed.
