El Nacional denounces attack: MP and Cicpc take the editor-in-chief José Gregorio Meza to testify

On the afternoon of this Wednesday, January 25, El Nacional de Venezuela is once again the victim of intimidation actions by the State. After 5:00 pm, a prosecutor from the Public Ministry arrived accompanied by a commission from the Scientific, Criminal, and Criminal Investigation Corps (Cicpc), at the home of journalist and editor-in-chief José Gregorio Meza and took him away for questioning.

“Attack on journalists from The National. The Prosecutor’s Office and Cicpc went to the house of journalist José Gregorio Meza and took him away for questioning. Four more journalists are being summoned and me. I’m in Madrid just in case», reported Miguel Henrique Otero, editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Nacional.

Before being taken away by the officials, Meza reported that the prosecutor argued that they should take him away to testify about some works that were published in The National. However, they did not inform him to which Cicpc headquarters they would transfer him for interrogation.

The National Association of Journalists replied to the complaint for the actions against the newspaper.

“Cicpc officials and the Prosecutor’s Office appeared at the home of José G. Meza, head of information for The National. He was transferred to an unknown destination. Four other journalists were also summoned. We demand his immediate release.” indicated the CNP.

Similarly, the NGO Espacio Público wrote: «A prosecutor from the Public Ministry and the Cicpc arrived on January 25 at the house of the editor of El Nacional, José Gregorio Meza, and took him to testify for some investigative work published in that media outlet.

Various journalists, activists, and non-governmental organizations have condemned the actions against the newspaper.
