Nearly £100m has been raised by a UK appeal following the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in what will be one of the “fastest and largest” emergency response efforts.

Funds that initially supported the search and rescue operation are now helping to provide children and families with food, water, temporary shelter – such as tents – and warm clothing.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which brings together 15 UK charities, said donations since the February 6 earthquake had reached £98 million.

“The British Red Cross has distributed 36 million hot meals, including 31 million loaves of bread, across the Turkish Red Crescent,” said DEC chief Saleh Saeed.

“I think this just shows the scale of the humanitarian operation and that people also need medical care.”

UN officials have warned that the death toll in the disaster could exceed 50,000.
