Carlos III will visit Germany tomorrow to strengthen ties after Brexit

He King Charles III will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, his first state visit to Germanythree days, after having had to postpone a trip to France following the protests over the pension reform in that country.

The sovereign and his wife, the queen consort, Camila, will land tomorrow in Berlin to carry out several official commitments before heading to Hamburg, according to the official program of the monarch.

The royal visit is perceived in this country as an attempt to build bridges with its European neighbors after Brexit was consummated, while the German president, Frank Walter Steinmeierhas described the trip as an “important European gesture”.

Charles III and the queen consort will be received by Steinmeir and the German first lady, Lady Elke Buedenbender, with military honors at the Brandenburg Gate. It is also the first time that this emblematic place has been used to welcome a state guest.

As revealed by palace sources at the beginning of this month, both couples will travel from there to the Bellevue Palace, in the center of Berlin, where a state banquet will be offered in honor of the British kings.

Charles III is expected to deliver a speech in the German Federal Parliament and also meet with Ukrainian refugees residing in Germany.

The King and Queen Consort are also expected to visit the German-British military unit in brandenburg and that they travel on Friday to the port city of hamburgwhere they will be given a guided tour around a renewable energy project.

The monarch and the host president will lay a wreath in front of the ruins of the church of San Nicolás, destroyed in an air raid during World War II and it is also expected that Charles III sign the callgolden book” of the city, which also houses the signature, from 1987, of the ill-fated Lady Di, then still his wife.

Although Carlos III has frequently visited Germany, this will be his first state visit as king and it will take place after having to suspend his planned trip to France due to the violent protests taking place in that country.

That frustrated visit to France it has been postponed to the beginning of next summer, depending on the respective agendas of Carlos III and the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

The last state visit by a British royal to Germany was in 2015, by the late Isabel IIwho also visited France in 2014.

As Prince of Wales, before becoming monarch, Charles III has made a total of 28 visits to Germany.
