War in Ukraine: US assesses the risks associated with the leakage of confidential documents

What will be the impact in Ukraine? The Pentagon said Sunday that the US is trying to assess the risks associated with the leak of classified documents released last week by the New York Times. “An interagency collaboration has been initiated to assess the impact (leakage) of these photographed documents on national security, as well as on our allies and partners,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said.

It is alleged that among the published secret documents there are assessments and reports of American intelligence related to the war in Ukraine, as well as with US allies.

Distributed on social networks, they can be invaluable to Moscow, revealing the extent of the penetration of American intelligence services into parts of the Russian military apparatus, the American media analyze.

Some potentially falsified documents

The Justice Department, which launched an investigation on Saturday, is trying to identify the source of the leak and is still verifying the authenticity of the released documents. According to the Washington Post, citing US officials, some of them appear to have been faked. But most of them are consistent with CIA reports circulating in the White House, the Pentagon or the State Department, the same source says.

Moreover, in some documents there is information concerning the US allies. One of them, for example, covered government discussions in South Korea about the possibility of supplying American artillery shells to Ukraine, according to the New York Times.

The Guardian, for its part, reports that documents, the authenticity of which has not yet been confirmed, show that in the coming weeks Kiev may not have enough S-300 anti-aircraft systems, which can protect vital infrastructure.
