The US Government appeals the court order against the abortion pill

The Justice Department of USA filed an appeal on Monday against the order of a federal judge of Texas that seeks to stop the commercialization of abortion pill mifepristone nationwide.

The President’s Administration Joe Biden asked the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Districtbased in New Orleans (Louisiana), to stop the decision “extraordinary and unprecedented” of the judge against the medication to abort.

In the appeal, he argued that the mifepristone is “safe and effective treatment”, endorsed by the scientific community for decades.

The appeal was supported by the attorneys general of 24 states, led by NYwho sent the court a legal support document to the Government and demanded that the order not be applied while that appeal is being processed.

The case began last Friday when the Texas federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ordered that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) withdraws the health authorization for mifepristone, in force since the year 2000.

In the ruling, the judge alleges that the FDA violated due process by approving mifepristone without regard to the “negative impact” of the drug in health.

Kacsmaryk, nominated by the former Republican president donald trump (2017-2021), gave a week for the entry into force of the order so that the Government of Democrat Joe Biden has time to appeal it.

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harriswho has championed the cause of reproductive rights in the Government, said on Friday that the judicial decision establishes a “dangerous precedent”.

For his part, the Secretary of Health, Xavier Becerrapromised on Sunday that the Government will “everything possible” to keep the pill available in the country, and did not rule out the possibility that the FDA would ignore the court order.
