The most serious mistake is to mix this process with political newsbecause the Constitution tells us about the future. (…) That is why I want to call on all political forces and those who are elected to have a high vision”, expressed the former president, the first woman to reach the Chilean Presidency and who governed in the periods 2006-2010 and 2014-2018.

At the exit of his polling station, Bachelet qualified that the new Constitution “will not solve all the problems”but that will serve as “a new framework for society.”

People need to think that things can improve, (…) and that is what we have to think about when we go to vote today, not about the contingent politics of everyday life”, he reiterated.

The former president, who at the end of her second government tried to promote a constituent process that ended up being shipwrecked, stressed that the Constitution must “unite” Chileans and “guarantee rights” for people with fewer resources.

If we talk about unity, we must be consistent with it, let’s talk about true unity. Unity means having a Constitution that guarantees rightsbecause we are not a united country if there are people who are having a terrible time”, he assessed.

The elections this Sunday, which arrive in a climate of apathy and electoral fatigue of the majority of Chileans, will elect the Constituent Council in charge of drafting the proposal for a new Constitution which will be held in a referendum next December.
