Closing of Congress in Ecuador: dozens of soldiers and police surround the National Assembly

Dozens of soldiers and police have surrounded the National Assembly of Ecuadorinstitution dissolved this Wednesday by the head of state, William Lassoby applying the call “death cross”, due to “serious internal and political commotion”.

The military and police, dressed in riot gear, surround the Assembly buildingwhich also has access restricted to several blocks.

The conservative Lasso applied the “death cross” in the midst of the impeachment trial against him and has asked the National Electoral Council to call early general elections, so that he will govern by decree until his successor takes office.

The general Nelson Proanohead of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, indicated that Lasso’s decision is legally based on what he must “to be respected” for all citizens.

“The Armed Forces and the National Police are obedient and non-belligerent institutions and we fulfill our mission strictly subject to civil power and the Constitution”he said in a message released this Wednesday.

At the same time, he added that they are “sure that the countrys will not accept any attempt to alter the constitutional order through violence to attack democracy”.

“In that case, the Armed Forces and National Police We will act firmly in compliance with our constitutional mission to protect the life, rights and guarantees of Ecuadorians.”, he added.
