Italy: a Peruvian and two Italians were arrested for importing drugs from Peru in votive candles

Two Italians and a Peruvian were arrested in an anti-drug operation in Italy against an organization that imported cocaine from Peru hidden inside votive candles.

During the operation, the Police seized eight kilos of cocaine base paste hidden inside some votive candles and they found an apartment in Brianza (north) where the drug was refined, as well as a pistol and ammunition, Italian media reported today.

According to investigators, the operation disrupted a large trafficking of cocaine base paste bound for Cesano Maderno, in Monza (northern Italy) where the drug was later refined and destined to supply the drug trade in the northern region of Lombardy.

The detainees, two Italian citizens aged 42 and 52 with a police record and a 39-year-old Peruvian, recently arrived in Italy, all residing in Cesano Maderno, are accused of international drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.

The arrests were possible thanks to the collaboration of the Italian and Peruvian Police, who verified that a criminal organization was operating in Lima that sent drugs to Italy hidden in local and religious crafts and, on occasions, in non-perishable edible products.

Cooperation in the investigation made it possible to locate last April the shipment from Peru of a package containing 14 religious candles in eight of which more than eight kilos of cocaine base paste had been hidden, destined for a 42-year-old Italian resident of Cesano Maderno.

Once the batch of cocaine ready to be shipped was identified, the Peruvian authorities, according to the investigative bodies, proceeded with the controlled international delivery, delaying the seizure of the narcotic substance in order to identify the network of recipients.

The drug, once the refining cycle was completed, had it been put on the market, it would have reached a value of around 200,000 euros.
