Guillermo Lasso will decide whether to run for re-election upon his return from the summit in Brazil

The President of Ecuador, William Lassoadvanced this Monday that he hopes to define upon his return from Brazil if he will stand for re-election for the presidential elections in August, when Parliament will also be formed, in extraordinary elections called after he dissolved the Legislature.

This was stated when asked about the definition of his position for the general elections on August 20 before traveling to Brazil to participate in the summit of South American presidents.

This is a dialogue that we must maintain with the CREO movement, with its president, with its board of directors and also with my government team, So, when I return, I hope to hold those meetings to clearly define the positions”, commented.

The electoral process was called after Lasso resorted to the so-called “cross death”, a constitutional tool to dissolve Parliament and call new elections, whose winners will be chosen to complete the period 2021-2025.

He did so by citing a “serious political crisis and internal commotion” when the Assembly, with an opposition majority, was debating and preparing to vote on a motion of censure against him as part of a political trial opened by the opposition for the alleged crime of embezzlement. (embezzlement).

So far there are seven presidential candidates and, among others, the definition of the Citizen Revolution movement, led by Rafael Correa (2007-2017), the best organized political organization and with the most structure at the moment in Ecuador, is expected.

It will be the second time that Lasso could meet directly with his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernandez, after the diplomatic impasse that caused the departure last March of the former correísta minister Maria de los Angeles Duarte from the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Quito, where she had taken refuge to avoid prison after being sentenced in a corruption case.
