Hochul further announced the opening of the exhibition “In the footsteps of heroes“, in it Capitol of the state, which highlights the movement for the rights of this group in New York up to the present.

Today the rainbow flag, which represents this community, will be raised in parks and important buildings while others will light up with its colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple tonight, among them the One World Trade Center and the bridges Mario Cuomo and Kosciuszko.

In June 1969, the constant police raids on a bar called Stonewall Innin it greenwich village of Manhattanwere the beginning of a revolt in which homosexual groups protested for their rights.

The riots of stone wall are considered the first time in the history of USA in which the LGBTQ+ community fought against the persecution of homosexuals. A year later, in 1970, in its commemoration, the first Pride parade was recorded.

This year’s parade is marked by a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in conservative state legislatures across the country, a total of 540, more than in each of the past five years, according to Human Rights Campaign.

Of the 540, 45 have been enacted so far, and 13 of these target transgender youth by banning gender-affirming medical services in red states like Iowa, Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida and Missouriwhich also prohibited trans girls and women from participating in women’s sports teams.

A total of 19 states now exclude trans athletes from school sports, according to Human Rights.

One of the most controversial was the law “don’t say gay” of Florida, which prohibits talking about gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools, signed into law by its Republican governor and now a candidate for the White House, Ron DeSantis.

On May 25, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) said it was “particularly concerned” due to the impact of these laws – which have been approved by at least 30 states – on the rights of trans and intersex children and youth.

The attacks (legislation) are not new, it is part of what has happened in the United States and in the world”, he commented to EFE Sandra Perezexecutive director of Pride NYCfounded 54 years ago and which organizes the pride march In New York.

Those attacks “they come from many sides” and they are also happening against non-white people, he observed.

The conservatives who have pushed these laws have ignored the gains made by LGBTQ+ and minority communities, he said. “They think we don’t have the right to live if you’re not white or straight.”, commented Pérez, of Puerto Rican origin.

He expressed his concern that with these new laws people feel more “on freedom” to attack them.

Whether the bills are passed or not, they have an impact”, one of them depression in young people who cannot express themselves openly about their sexuality or receive the help they need, he indicated.

Following these legislative actions, on June 17 there will be a demonstration of the LGBTQIA+ community with the purpose of promoting dialogue about the problems they face and advocating for changes.
