Emma Coronel: the wife of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán leaves prison in the United States

Now, according to data from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Coronel is in a halfway house in Los Angeles, California, and is expected to be released on September 13.

The halfway houses their purpose is to provide inmates with a safe, structured and supervised environment in which they receive advice and support for their progressive reintegration into society.

“The love of life” from “El Chapo”

Coronel was born in Santa Clara, California, but grew up in the ranchería of La Angostura, a place with just a few dozen inhabitants in the region of northern Mexico known as the “Golden Triangle” of drug trafficking.

He met Guzmán when he was barely 17 years old and, according to Mexican drug trafficking investigators such as the journalist and writer José Reveles, he became the “love of life” of the capo.

The couple have twin daughters.

Shortly after his arrest, in February 2021, Coronel pleaded guilty and cooperated with justice, which earned him a moderate sentence.

As part of his plea deal with prosecutors, Coronel had admitted to acting as a messenger between Guzmán and other members of the Sinaloa cartel while the kingpin was held in Mexico’s Altiplano prison following his arrest in 2014.

Guzmán used those communications to plan his 2015 escape from prison, north of Toluca, Mexico, through an underground tunnel built by the cartel that led to his cell’s shower room.
